As part of New York Governor Andrew M Cuomo’s Reforming the Energy Vision (REV) strategy, the company Electrovaya will be designing, constructing, and selling a 500 kilowatt (kW) lithium-ion battery energy storage system to be used by Con Edison to function as grid resiliency support, according to recent reports.

The new energy storage system is being designed to meet the requirements put forward by Con Edison, and will be used in place of conventional mobile diesel options. As it stands, Con Edison relies mostly on such portable, easily dispatchable diesel systems for temporary needs. The new energy storage system “will store up to 500 kilowatts of electricity, and provide up to 800 kilowatt-hours of energy to the grid for the purposes of increased grid efficiency and resiliency during outages,” according to a news release from the company.

Electrovaya

“The project received support through the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority’s (NYSERDA) Smart Grid Program as part of Governor Cuomo’s Reforming the Energy Vision (REV), a comprehensive energy strategy to build a clean, resilient and affordable energy system for all New Yorkers.”

The Director of Research and Development at Con Edison, Margarett Jolly, commented: “Con Edison is pleased to be working with Electrovaya on this innovative project. We believe that Electrovaya’s (Transportable Energy Storage System) TESS will have tremendous potential to strengthen our network and ultimately improve our service to our customers. We worked closely with Electrovaya for some time to develop the specification for this project and are excited about seeing the results during field trials.”

Current plans call for Electrovaya to deliver the new 500 kW system to Con Edison sometime in the second quarter of 2016. Presuming that all goes well, one can probably suppose that Electrovaya will be further involved in such initiatives in the state.
