SunEdison’s dominance in the global renewable energy business has received yet another stamp of approval at the Renewable World 2015 convention held recently at New Delhi.

Pashupathy Gopalan, SunEdison’s President of Asia-Pacific and Sub-Saharan Africa, was named the ‘Solar Power Person of the Year’ during the Renewable World International Convention in Delhi, India, on 23 July 2015.

“It is an incredible honor to be named the Solar Person of the Year,” said Mr. Gopalan. “SunEdison is dedicated to furthering India’s renewable energy program, and plans to develop more than 15 gigawatts of Solar by 2022. With hard work and dedication, I’m confident that we can achieve this goal together.”

The award strengthens the notion that emerging solar markets, especially in Africa and Asia, are set to become the focus of the global solar power revolution. Large developing countries like South Africa, China, and India all have ambitious solar power targets that would eventually replace a substantial capacity of ageing fossil-fuel power plants. Relatively smaller economies like Egypt, Thailand, the UAE, Jordan, Philippines, and Pakistan have also made significant progress in implementing a robust solar power program.

Mr Golapan specifically mentioned India while receiving the award. SunEdison currently has an operational capacity of 250 MW and more than 1 GW capacity under various stages of development in India, and the company is active across all project sizes including utility-scale, rooftop, and canal-top projects. It also operates over 2,000 agricultural solar water pumps and more than 50 rural micro-grids. SunEdison has committed to set up 15 GW of renewable energy capacity over the next 5-7 years in India.
