Our good friend Bob Tregilus, host of the Plug In America podcast, has just dropped us some more pictures of the under-construction Tesla Gigafactory, which will be the largest building in the world in terms of footprint before long. As you may recall, Bob lives not far from there and actually noticed what seemed to be work on the site before Tesla announced its location.

He says that security has heightened and “one has to drive a considerable distance off road and then hike several miles to get a view of the Gigafactory.” So, a big thanks to Bob for the pics! Some more notes will follow his newest photos.

Yep, it’s still a very long and very flat building. But a lot of progress has certainly been made since this January photo. (If you didn’t see, it’s actually ahead of schedule.)

Bob had another interesting comment/question:”All of the temporary bungalows makes me wonder if it housing for workers, temporary office space for engineers, or a bit of both?”

The photos are looking west toward Reno-Sparks. More details, via Bob, for those of you familiar with the area or just interested in these details, are as follows:

Interstate 80 (I-80) is to the right following the green tree line which marks the Truckee River which flows east from Lake Tahoe, through Reno-Sparks to the land-locked Pyramid Lake on the Pyramid Paiute Reservation just south of the town of Gerlach and the Black Rock Desert.

The buildings seen in the background are some of the older developments in the Tahoe-Reno Industrial Center. The biggest building to the upper left of the Gigafactory is the Petco Distribution Center and behind that is Walmart.

In the wider angle shots, the building you can see that’s furthest away, and on the opposite side of the Truckee River (and I-80), is the Apple Data Center.
