Tesla Model S GreenWith all the hype about the new Tesla Model S Ludicrous mode and its record-breaking sprint to 60 mph (see this, this, and this), it seems that most of us have glossed over a bigger announcement. The first line under “Luuudicrous Mode” in Elon Musk’s blog post reads like this: “While working on our goal of making the power train last a million miles, we came up with the idea for an advanced smart fuse for the battery.”

Wait a second, what? One million miles?

As “onesecond,” who highlighted this line and rightly pushed for a piece about it, writes:

It is whole step away from this consuming and throw away society which I find despicable given the environmental impact! Tesla wants its car to last forever and offers upgrades to achieve just that. That’s a total change in philosophy from other car makers who want you to buy a new car asap and therefore always roll out minor cosmetic changes to make your car look old. Instead Tesla is improving the actual car on the way! This should get a lot more coverage! <3

Well said. Coverage you have.

As part of that “offers upgrades” comment, that is what is really exciting about the battery capacity booster, imho. From what I understood, Tesla will annually offer the option of upgrading your battery to a higher capacity every one to two years… for a price, of course, but that is tremendously more useful and environmentally friendly than having to upgrade your entire car. And no other electric car manufacturer offers that yet. As onesecond notes, it goes against the whole industry mindset of enticing or practically forcing consumers to the newest model/product.

But yeah, the overall aim: a 1-million-mile Tesla power train… is the company insane?

As “30seconds” writes on the TMC forum, “I really can’t see how anyone can continue to compare Tesla to any other automaker with goals like this.” Tesla is in another league. On another planet. Its aims to do right by the consumer and the planet have it operating in a completely different way than big automakers, and it is being rewarded as a result. People love Tesla… as they should.

Of course, the other thing Tesla is doing is highlighting the benefits of electric vehicles. With many fewer moving parts and simpler insides, electric vehicles can last much longer than conventional gasmobiles before they are akin to moving trash cans. A gasmobile power train can’t legitimately last for 1 million miles. An electric one? Maybe. And if so, it seems Tesla will be the first to prove it. What’s new?
