Vestas Wind Systems has announced orders worth a total of 860 MW over the space of five days, covering seven orders in five countries.

Earlier this week we reported on Vestas’ announcement that it had been awarded 150 MW worth of wind turbines to a Texas wind farm being developed by EDF Renewable Energy. Little did we know that the announcement would proceed seven more orders, totalling 860 MW. In brief, the orders were:

  • 26 June, 66 MW, Scotland
  • 28 June, 185 MW, Chile
  • 29 June, 39 MW, Denmark
  • 30 June, 33 MW, Finland
  • 30 June, 155 MW, US (Maine)
  • 30 June, 274 MW, US (Texas)
  • 30 June, 108 MW, US (undisclosed)

Scotland: Vestas will provide 22 of its V90-3.0 MW turbines to the Galawhistle project, set to be located approximately 7 kilometres east of Muikirk, in East Ayrshire. The project was provided consent in August of 2012, and is expected to reach completion and operation in early 2017.

“We are very pleased that Infinis have chosen to work with us on the Galawhistle wind power plant,” said Klaus Steen Mortensen, President Vestas Northern Europe. “Despite regulatory uncertainty, this order underlines our engagement and commitment in the UK market, where cus-tomers see the value of deploying cost-competitive, carbon-free onshore wind.”

Vestas will provide delivery, installation, and commissioning of the 22 turbines, as well as a 5-year Active Output Management service agreement.

Chile: News of the deal was rumored back in May, but only now confirmed, with Vestas set to provide 56 of its V117-3.3 MW turbines totaling 185 MW to the San Juan wind power project in Atacama, Chile, being developed by Latin America Power.

Vestas will supply, install, and commission the turbines and provide a 5-year Active Output Management service agreement. Delivery of the turbines is expected for the first quarter of 2016, with completion of the project by the end of that year.

Denmark: Vestas will provide 12 V112-3.3 MW totalling 39 MW as part of a long-time frame agreement with long-time Vestas customer Skovgaard Invest ApS. The Øst for Vemb is located in western Jutland near Vemb, in the Holstebro municipality, though construction and completion dates are not available as yet.

“The Danish west coast holds ideal wind conditions for wind power plants in Denmark,” said Klaus Steen Mortensen. “The business case is strong and we look forward realising yet another successful project with Skovgaard Invest.”

Vestas will supply, install, and commission the 12 turbines and provide a 15-year full-scope Active Output Management service agreement.

Finland: Vestas is set to provide 10 V126-3.3 MW wind turbines totaling 33 MW to the Nik-karinkaarto wind power project in Raahe, being developed by Suomen Hyötytuuli Oy. Delivery is expected for the first half of 2016 with expected completion of the project by the end of that year.

“This order further confirms the competitiveness of the Vestas 3 MW platform in the Finnish market,” said Steen Mortensen. “We look forward to working together with Suomen Hyötytuuli to bring this project online in this increasingly important market.”

Vestas will supply, install, and commission the turbines and provide an unspecified-length Active Output Management service agreement.

US, Maine: Vestas will deliver 47 V112-3.3 MW turbines totaling 155 MW to the Bingham wind power plant set to be developed in Somerset County, Maine. The project size will actually reach 185 MW, based on components already ordered through Vestas at a previous date. Both installation and completion of the project is expected sometime in 2016.

“New England suffers every year from high and extremely volatile energy prices,” says Chris Brown, President of Vestas’ sales and service division in the United States and Canada. “Wind power is available at a competitive price, with zero fuel cost. Integrating wind into the New England electric power system protects consumers from future price instability introduced by overdependence on natural gas. We are delighted to continue our strategic partnership with SunEdison, one of the most committed and resourceful renewable energy developers in the world.”

Vestas will provide a 10-year Active Output Management service agreement to the project, in addition to supply, installation, and commissioning.

US, Texas: Vestas will provide SunEdison with 83 V117-3.3 MW turbines totaling 274 MW to an undisclosed project set to be located in Texas, which will complete a 300 MW project, and will be the largest V117-3.3 MW project in the world.

“Our 3 MW turbine platform is proving its versatility across a variety of North American wind regimes, and we are starting to see much broader deployment across the wind belt,” says Chris Brown, President of Vestas’ sales and service division in the United States and Canada. “This project will be its first deployment in the important Texas market, where the combination of a robust design, outstanding grid support, and a large rotor make this turbine the best choice to minimize the cost of energy throughout the life of the project. We’re very happy to add this latest agreement to our growing strategic relationship with SunEdison.”

Vestas will provide a 10-year Active Output Management service agreement in addition to supply, install, and commissioning.

US: Vestas will provide 54 V110-2.0 MW turbines to an undisclosed project being developed by an undisclosed company in the US. Vestas will supply, install, and commission the turbines, as well as provide a 5-year Active Output Management service agreement. Completion of the project is expected in the fourth quarter of 2016, with delivery taking place in the third quarter of 2016.
