Trina Solar Announces 500 MW Solar Module Manufacturing Unit In Thailand
One of the world’s leading solar cell and module manufacturers, Trina Solar, has announced plans to expand its manufacturing base in Thailand.
Trina Solar has announced that it will establish a new production facility in Thailand, which will be able to manufacture 500 MW solar PV modules and 700 MW of solar cells per year. The production facility is expected to be operational by late 2015 or early 2016. The new facility may also allow Trina Solar to work around the anti-dumping duties it faces in the EU and the US on its Chinese-made products. The facility will also likely service the rapidly growing Thai solar power market.
Trina Solar’s manufacturing unit developed in Rayong, which will also be the location of another solar cells and modules manufacturing facility owned by Chinese company Zhongli Talesun. The facility is expected to be operational by October. Talesun had also announced plans to set up 1 GW of solar power capacity in Thailand over the next 3 years.
According to a recent forecast, power generation capacity in Thailand is expected to rise to 55 GW by 2030 with its share of renewables to increase to 25% by 2021. Biomass is expected to dominate the renewable energy market, whereas solar PV and wind energy are expected to be the second and third largest contributors respectively.
Thailand has recently emerged as one of the most attractive solar power market for power generation as well as module/cell manufacturing as the government has proactively implemented support policies to promote growth in the solar power sector, including announcing long-term feed-in tariffs for rooftop as well as large-scale solar PV projects.
