SolarCity Reaches 5 GWh In One Day, Two Weeks After Smashing Past 4 GWh…

SolarCity continues to beat its own electricity generation milestones at mind-blowing rates. According to a tweet from Chairman Elon Musk, SolarCity just surpassed the 5 GWh/day benchmark. This occurred just two weeks after reaching 4 GWh/day of electricity generation. In other words, SolarCity is quickly approaching a doubling of the 3 GWh single-day generation record it hit April 2014.

In understanding SolarCity’s rapid rise in clean electricity generation in five years, you only need to look at the below graph, which shows this acceleration.

In 2010 alone, SolarCity alone did not generate 1 GWh/ of electricity from its consumers. Three years later in 2013, SolarCity surpassed the 1 GWh/day mark, only to reach both 2 GWh/day and 3GWh a day benchmarks in 2014.

With over 168,000 customers now, SolarCity is aiming for the ambitious target of 1 million consumers by July 2018. This is going to be critical as the company advances its daily consumer electricity generation.

Motley Fool last spring suggested they would have to attract an average of 15,254 monthly customers from May 2014 until its July 2018 target date. While it’s a lofty goal, it’s not unattainable. Motley Fool points out how better economies of scale and efficiencies will help to attract a growing number of SolarCity customers across the US.

As SolarCity seeks more efficiencies and innovations to increase its customer base, rapidly declining solar prices, along with increasing climate change concerns, will provide underlying support in the leading residential solar installer’s growth, and overall electricity generation milestones (like those noted above).

So the next question to ask is when will SolarCity hit 6 GWh/day? It took three years to reach 1 GWh/day, then spiked to 3 GWh/day within a year. With summertime coming (+ its better solar potential) and more customers signing up, don’t be surprised if SolarCity reaches 6GWh/day by early summer.

And how did Elon Musk celebrate reaching 5GWh/day? By putting out another tweet, suggesting while all this solar power was being produced, something was missing from the picture.

I wonder what that could be?
