Koch Brothers & Sierra Club Back Tesla Direct Sales
February 18th, 2015 by Christopher DeMorro
It’s hard to imagine two organizations more politically distant than the Koch Brothers-funded Americans for Prosperity and the nature-loving Sierra Club. Yet both of these organizations have signed a letter, along with 8 other public-interest groups, backing the efforts of Elon Musk and Tesla Motors to sell electric cars without going through third-party dealerships.
The letter states that even though many of these groups often find themselves on opposite ends of important political issue, even they can come to an agreement that the anti-Tesla sales laws are absurd public policy. “Some of us frequently find ourselves on different sides of public policy debates,” the letter says. “However, we now find common ground on an issue of considerable public importance concerning state laws that restrict the purchase and sale of automobiles.”
The letter goes on to claim that such laws “retard innovation” and that there is “no valid reason” to use antiquated laws to prevent Tesla from entering the market. Because Tesla has no franchised dealerships to compete with, many arguments against direct sales are simply moot… though that hasn’t stopped dealership associations from trying anyway.
I’m almost starting to feel bad for car dealers, as this is one of the few political topics that both conservatives and liberals seem to agree on. Sure, some well-funded GOP holdouts are trying to prevent Tesla sales in places like Texas and Connecticut, but if you’ve managed to provoke the ire of both the Koch Brothers and the Sierra Club, then you’re gonna have a bad time. Not that we’re ready to forgive the Koch Brothers for their many other anti-green campaigns… but even a broken clock is right twice a day.
