The community solar energy company SunShare is partnering with one of the largest construction firms in the US, Mortenson, to develop and build solar energy gardens in Minnesota, as per a press release published yesterday.

The news of the new partnership arrives on the heels of Xcel Energy’s announcement that it’s now planning to dive head first into renewables — with the goal, reportedly, being to expand its solar energy infrastructure from the 14 MW of today to 2400 MW by 2030.

“This is the story of one of the largest, nationally-recognized construction firms forming a strategic alliance with an innovative, up-and-coming community solar company to bring access to solar energy to everyone in Xcel Energy’s service territory in Minnesota,” stated Jonathan W Postal, SunShare’s senior vice president.

As per the recently announced partnership between SunShare and Mortenson, SunShare will develop, finance, and own/operate the solar gardens, as well as being responsible for signing up users for the program; while, predictably, Mortenson will be in charge of the engineering, construction, and procurement processes.

The energy generated by the installation will be “available to Xcel Energy residential, municipal and commercial subscribers as part of its community solar program throughout Hennepin, Dakota, Wright, Ramsey, Carver, Scott, Anoka, and Washington counties,” the press release adds.

“Minnesota’s community solar program dramatically expands the ability for companies, governmental entities and residents to utilize solar,” noted Trent Mostaert, the vice president and general manager at Mortenson. “This is a great partnership and an opportunity for Mortenson to work with SunShare, a leading community solar company, and bring our significant solar experience home to Minnesota.”
