ElectrovayaThe Canadian lithium-ion battery maker Electrovaya was recently presented with a $1.3-million grant, with the purpose of the grant being to aid the company in the production and delivery of multiple Intelligent Energy Storage Systems (IESS) to a number of different locations for Toronto Hydro and London Hydro.

The grant is supported by the Ontario Ministry of Energy’s Smart Grid Fund. The IESS units will be put to use for a number of different specific purposes/applications — including infrastructure deferment, electric vehicle charging, phase balancing, and general energy storage functions.

These Electrovaya IESS units are currently expected to be installed and online by the middle of 2015.

On a related note, Electrovaya recently announced that it’s now cooperating with Walmart Canada on a number of projects, with the intention of lowering Walmart’s carbon emissions footprint. As part of this, it is improving the efficiency of the distribution and warehousing industries.

Walmart Canada has already tested the Electrovaya lithium-ion 2.0 technology for six months, resulting in the current relationship as an approved vendor, according to Dr Sankar Das Gupta, CEO of Electrovaya.
