IRENA & Clean Energy Solutions Center Teaming Up To Support Renewable Energy Policy Advice Network

IRENA

The International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) and the Clean Energy Solutions Center are teaming up in order to help speed up the adoption of renewable energy throughout the world, according to a recent announcement. A Memorandum of Understanding between the two was (relatively) recently established with regard to the collaboration.

The jointly led collaboration, to be referred to as the Renewable Energy Policy Advice Network (REPAN), will utilize the resources of both of the organizations to create a worldwide network of experts — which will be available to countries around the world to assist them in the design and implementation of renewable energy policies and programs.

“This collaboration benefits policy makers looking for support to implement policies and programs designed to increase their countries’ deployment of renewable energy,” stated Jonathan Pershing, Deputy Assistant Secretary for Climate Change Policy and Technology, Office of International Affairs at the US Department of Energy. “By taking a coordinated approach to renewable energy policy assistance, our collaboration will ultimately increase the implementation of renewable energy policies throughout the world.”

“As renewable energy costs continue to fall and new markets open up, policy makers around the world are looking for the most effective policies and regulatory frameworks to scale up renewables,” echoed IRENA Director General Adnan Z Amin. “This partnership will put the latest thinking and best practices in renewable energy policy in the hands of key stakeholders, helping countries commit to concrete actions that advance renewable energy deployment.”

REPAN will provide assistance in a number of different, distinct areas:

1. Free, fast-response consultations on renewable energy policy and program strategies, regulations, and standards. This will be through the Clean Energy Solutions Center’s ‘Ask an Expert’ service — which will be expanded to also include experts from developing countries.

2. Expert assistance for Renewables Readiness Assessments (RRAs), conducted in eight countries each year.

3. Expert assistance for the development of renewable energy and grid integration roadmaps in Africa, Asia, and South/Central America.

4. Expert assistance for the establishment of stable regulatory frameworks that support the deployment of renewable energy.

Note that we’ve covered REPAN before — in a recent overview that we did on IRENA. As we covered in that article, IRENA is doing quite a lot to advance the deployment of renewables throughout the world — REPAN, while certainly useful, represents just a part of IRENA’s overall efforts.

For more information on all of IRENA’s other projects/services, I recommend you check out the aforementioned article as well as the IRENA website.
