Spanish wind energy technology provider Gamesa has landed yet another order from an Indian power project developer as it continues to boost its revenue from India.

Independent power producer Greenko has placed an order of 100 MW with Gamesa. This order is in addition to the 250 MW order Greenko had placed earlier with the technology provider. Gamesa will provide 50 units of its G97-2.0 turbine to wind farms in the states of Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, and Rajasthan.

Wind energy continues to find favor amongst all renewable energy technologies in India. In the absence of a regulatory boost for solar energy combined with the ongoing row on sale import duties, wind energy has been the attractive renewable energy sector for the private power project developers in India.

Among the simplest reasons for the affinity towards wind energy is the relative maturity of the market. Wind energy constitutes two-thirds of India’s installed renewable energy capacity. The Ministry of New and Renewable Energy had renewed a generation based incentive for projects proving that the government continues to back the sector.

And crucially, while the preferential tariffs for solar power projects are declining, those for wind energy projects are rising slowly but steadily.

In India, preferential tariffs for wind energy projects are based on the site where the projects are located. Projects located at low wind speed sites are offered higher tariff and vice versa. Now, most of the high wind speed sites in India have been exhausted and developers are looking to install projects in low-wind speed sites especially when the required technology is available and tariffs are attractive.

Gamesa has a pipeline of projects representing a cumulative capacity of 4,300 MW and has installed 1,100 MW capacity so far. India currently contributes 22% to Gamesa’s total sales volumes.
