London Electric Carsharing Network Coming Thanks To Billionaire Vincent Bollore
March 17th, 2014 by Zachary Shahan
7 years ago, when I was introduced to the Velib bikesharing program in Paris, I knew that was going to be an influential, popular model replicated elsewhere. About 9 years ago, I was an early member of Zipcar and benefited greatly from the budding carsharing network it was building. I loved it, and was not at all surprised to see it grow. Now, similar to both of these (especially the latter), electric carsharing is the new kid on the block. This one really excites me for more reason.
Electric cars are great for such a system. Typically, one doesn’t drive a ton when using a carsharing network — conventional rental cars are often cheaper for that. Furthermore, they are essentially used within the city, not for long-distance trips. So, the range of a Nissan Leaf, Renault Zoe, or Bollore Bluecar are adequate for most of the trips. Also, since the cars have designated parking spots for when they are waiting for a customer, those spots can be equipped with chargers that allow for easy, quick charging. And then the last bit is my favorite: carsharing networks are great for introducing people to new vehicles and letting you explore new technology. People can easily test out electric cars for genuine use. That’s all that is often needed in order to get someone to go electric — the many benefits of electric cars sell themselves. If someone using the program decides they do want to buy a car, I think this will make them more likely to go electric.
So, all that said, I’m very excited to see that billionaire Vincent Bollore is going to do a London version of Bollore’s successful Autolib program in Paris. Here’s some more info and commentary from Jake via Planetsave:
Billionaire Vincent Bollore will back an electric carsharing network in London. The system will have thousands of electric vehicle charging stations and should be operating in late 2014 or early 2015. Bollore heads the Bollore Group, which is a family…
