The US Environmental Protection Agency’s Green Power Partnership has released it’s latest rankings showcasing the annual green power use of leading companies across the US. Topping the National Top 100 for the seventh time is Intel, with 100% of their electricity made up by green power.

Intel is generating enough to cover 3.1 billion kilowatt-hours (kWh) each year, thanks to biogas, biomass, small-hydro, solar, and wind technologies.

The next closest, Microsoft, pales in comparison, covering its 1.9 billion kWh with only 80% green power. It’s an impressive achievement, and Microsoft jumped over third place Kohl’s Department Stores (who themselves are generating 105% of their required energy from green power thanks to solar), but they still have a long way to go to match the achievement that is Intel’s commitment to green energy.

The National Top 100 includes companies from all across the spectrum, from retail companies to technology & telecom companies all the way through to government institutions. The Top 30 Retail, Top 10 Federal Government, Top 30 College & University, and Top 30 Tech & Telecom each have their own listing with specific details for each, as well as previous years listings going back to 2004.

Made from Fortune 500 companies to local, state, and federal governments, as well a a number of colleges and universities, the Green Power Partnership aims to work with a wide variety of leading organisations in an attempt to focus and publicise the good work some of these companies are doing. Naturally, such a program is not comprehensive, and only represents those companies who have willingly agreed to participate. That being said, over 1,400 organisations are involved in the Partnership, many of them industry leaders.
