You have likely heard of or seen electrical wiring ignite due to overheating. Whether the cause of that is outdated wiring, carelessness, or rats, the presence of a good protection device is worth its weight in gold.

According to Green Car Reports, Tesla Motors recently updated its software to automatically reduce the current the vehicle draws from power outlets if there appears to be a wiring fault, since some wiring faults can cause fires. It will reduce the current by 25%.

According to Tesla Motors, the software update will “…help protect you even when a problem exists that is outside of the car or charging electronics,” and it should “significantly increase robustness and safety.”

This may have been a response to the most recent Tesla Model S fire incident. However, whether or not the fire was caused by the Model S (something Tesla contends), it is a reminder that over-current and overheating protection is critical.
