Dropoly — An Energy Efficiency Game

Originally published on Ecopreneurist.

Dropoly

Could an online game help teach homeowners and renters alike how to make better energy decisions and make their living spaces more energy-efficient?

An interactive energy-saving tool disguised as a game, Dropoly aims to help its players reduce their energy usage, thereby saving money and reducing their carbon footprint at the same time. This gamified energy audit could make it much simpler for people to get the information they need to make effective energy savings changes in their homes.

“Developed alongside Ohio communities, the online game helps families build a virtual home room by room, identifying hidden savings opportunities for both homeowners and renters and helping game players make decisions based on future savings and payback. Whether it’s running the washer on an extra spin cycle or turning the thermostat up four degrees on summer evenings, Dropoly delivers over 100 free and low-cost recommendations, making its app accessible to families of any income level.” – Dropoly

As part of its nationwide launch, Dropoly is inviting families to “play to win” this month, promising $25 gift cards from Restaurant.com for the first 300 families to create an account, $100 gift cards to each of the top ten most active game players in the month of October, and a $250 gift card to Amazon.com for the most active player of all.

“Dropoly is a fun and interactive energy savings tool. Find how out how much you can save this month by playing the game, and compete with friends and neighbors for prizes. And, it’s free!

Keep track of your utility bills, your energy upgrades, and your to-do list on Dropoly. We’ll remind you when that next bill is coming around, and help you track your progress.

Energy efficiency changes should be easy and cost-effective. Dropoly helps you prioritize upgrades by cost and payback, so that you are getting the most out of your investment. And, over half of the recommendations are completely free.” – Dropoly

You can start playing (and learning) at Dropoly, and sign up for this month’s Energy Challenge on their Facebook page.

I don't like paywalls. You don't like paywalls. Who likes paywalls? Here at CleanTechnica, we implemented a limited paywall for a while, but it always felt wrong — and it was always tough to decide what we should put behind there. In theory, your most exclusive and best content goes behind a paywall. But then fewer people read it! We just don't like paywalls, and so we've decided to ditch ours. Unfortunately, the media business is still a tough, cut-throat business with tiny margins. It's a never-ending Olympic challenge to stay above water or even perhaps — gasp — grow. So ...
