Team PlanetSolar writes from the ship’s blog: More accustomed to oceans, the MS Tûranor PlanetSolar undertook her first fluvial navigations in 2013! An initiation on the Thames, and now she has been prevailed upon to sail on the Seine. And do not assume that navigating the Seine is all smooth sailing … tree trunks, vessels of all kinds, and locks (often very narrow for a catamaran 15 meters wide).

At that point, Villetard and its experienced pilot, who knows the Seine like the back of his hand, got involved! In fact, the MS Tûranor PlanetSolar will be accompanied by a pilot who will ensure that the “coast is clear” and that the solar ship can safely pursue her journey.

We would like to thank Villetard for its support, and for seeing PlanetSolar’s final mission through to the end!

Thank you for your great support during this 2013 campaign! See you in 2014!

The following is an official news release from PlanetSolar:

PlanetSolar will winter in the Cité de la Voile Eric Tabarly, Lorient

After the 2013 campaign’s successful conclusion in Paris, the world’s largest solar boat reached her wintering site today—the Cité de la Voile Eric Tabarly in Lorient (Southern Brittany, France). Consecrated to sailing, this unique place of cultural, scientific, and technical discovery is partnering with PlanetSolar by hosting the solar catamaran from September 2013 to March 2014.

Chip in a few dollars a month to help support independent cleantech coverage that helps to accelerate the cleantech revolution!

Thanks to this partnership, the public will be able to discover the MS Tûranor PlanetSolar and learn about the scientific aspects of the climate research carried out during the summer 2013 “PlanetSolar DeepWater” expedition. An official opening day will inaugurate the exhibition, and children’s educational events will be held at the Cité de la Voile as early as November.

This well-deserved wintering period will allow the shore team, in collaboration with the University of Geneva, to prepare for the 2014 campaign, which promises to be enthralling!

The MS Tûranor PlanetSolar’s 2013 crew was comprised of: Gérard d’Aboville (Captain), Brieuc Delbot (Second), Antoine Simon (electrical engineer), Hugo Buratti (seaman and steward), and Vincent Brunet (steward). During the “PlanetSolar DeepWater” expedition, the scientific team from the University of Geneva rounded out the crew.

About the Cité de la Voile Eric Tabarly

A place for discussion and discovery, the Cité de la Voile Eric Tabarly is an exhibition space dedicated to modern sailing and ocean racing in honor of Éric Tabarly. Through a permanent exhibition featuring numerous experiments, videos, reenactments, and simulators, the visitor plays an active part in his/her experience.

The team was developed in partnership with the Cité des Sciences et de l’Industrie (a science museum in Paris) and many companies from the sailing sector for their expertise. Beyond its touristic mission, the Cité de la Voile Éric Tabarly strives to highlight innovative navigational projects as well as scientific initiatives related to sustainable development, the main challenge for water and oceans. Staunchly focused on the future, the Cité de la Voile organized the Savanturiers of the Sea Festival (March 2013), the Innov’sail international symposium (June 2013), and has been hosting the exhibition “Tara Expeditions, Exploring a New World: the Ocean” in maritime containers since May.

In order to fund the 2013 campaign, PlanetSolar SA is supported by the University of Geneva, Ciel électricité, Switcher, the Swiss AOC-IGP Association, Younicos, Plantbacter, Actides, GoPro, Jean-René Germanier SA, BCCC Attorneys-at-Law, Tempur, Hempel, Présence Suisse, Energissima, UIM, YELLO, and Waste Free Oceans.
