The Energy Department released two new reports on August 5, 2013 showcasing record growth across the US wind market — increasing America’s share of clean, renewable energy and supporting tens of thousands of jobs nationwide. According to these reports, the United States continues to be one of the world’s largest and fastest growing wind markets. As part of that, the Energy Department (DOE) has published a very cool map: Wind Farm Growth Through the Years. You can zoom and pan to areas you want to see up close (they suggest California, Texas, and Iowa). Click play to see how fast wind power has grown in the last 35 years. You can click and drag the time slider to see any year you would like.

Today (Thursday, August 8) at 3 pm ET, the Department invites us to discuss the innovative projects, technologies, and policies that are helping America stay competitive in this booming global industry during a special Google+ Hangout on wind energy in America.

America is home to one of the largest and fastest growing wind markets in the world.

Today (Thursday, August 8) at 3 pm ET, we invite you to discuss the innovative projects, technologies, and policies that are helping America stay competitive in this booming global industry during a special Google+ Hangout on wind energy in America.

During the Hangout, you’ll have the opportunity to ask experts from across the industry anything you want about the wind industry — from the status of offshore wind projects to projections for industry growth to the logistics for setting up your own small turbine to power your home. For the first time ever, we’re also giving you the opportunity to join our Hangout on Air live and ask your wind energy questions directly to our panelists.

For a chance to be featured during the live discussion, submit your questions by emailing newmedia@hq.doe.gov, posting a comment on the Energy Department’s Facebook and Google+ page, or tweeting @ENERGY using #AskEnergy.

Our expert panelists for the August 8 discussion include:

  • Jose Zayas, Director of the Energy Department’s Wind and Water Power Technologies Office
Ask Jose your questions about the Energy Department’s efforts to support America’s leadership in manufacturing and deploying wind energy technologies — both on-land and offshore.
  • Ryan Wiser, Staff Scientist, Lawrence Berkeley National Lab
Ask Ryan your questions about the latest trends in the U.S. wind power market as well as projections for future growth of the industry.
  • Mike Bergey, President Bergey Windpower
Ask Mike your questions about the distributed wind market and using wind energy to power homes and small businesses.
  • Julia Bovey, Vice President, External Affairs, First Wind
Ask Julia your questions about translating public support for renewable energy sources into good public policy.

We look forward to engaging with you on this important topic!
