hertz24-7_header_logoThe car rental company Hertz has announced that it intends to make the Hertz 24/7 carsharing service so accessible, that, by 2016, “self-serve” vehicles from the service will be available “within minutes of the majority of the United States population.”

What is this doing on CleanTechnica? This is helpful to adopters of electric vehicles, as they would be able to rent regular gasoline-powered cars when they need to make occasional long trips which exceed the range of their own electric vehicles, and it’s also very helpful to those who drop the car altogether for bicycling or transit.

Hertz says that this service will allow customers to decide the length of their rental — whether it is hourly, daily, weekly, or monthly — rather than be restricted to the options of conventional rental car services.

There are currently 1,800 Hertz 24/7 branches around the world and a total of 35,000 vehicles available at these branches. That 1,800 branches are expected to increase to 2,000 by the end of this year.

The rental service is to be integrated into the parking lots of the store chains Walgreens and Lowe’s. The stores will be able to “monetize their parking lot,” Hertz notes. “It’s almost a no-brainer. It’s part of our asset-light strategy, investing in technology and making the car, if you will, the bricks and mortar,” Hertz CEO Mark Frissora told Bloomberg.

Imagine if your own car malfunctioned while at Lowes, and you needed to pick up your children from school. You could just hop into a Hertz car and leave!

Once a member, you just need to swipe the “24/7 key fob” on the key readers on the car’s windshield and you then have the car and can drive away”
