Bright Lights Anyone? Acuity’s Autobahn LED Roadway Luminaire Introduced

For those ready to step into the world of energy-efficient LED lighting, Atlanta-based Acuity Brands has introduced with the Autobahn Roadway Luminaire, a light that to deliver brighter and more energy-efficient illumination for enhanced visibility on local, collector and major roadways.

Acuity Brands is an international manufacturer of energy-efficient lighting and control solutions. It reported 2010 revenues of $1.6 billion. The company manufactures LED lamps, printed circuit boards, optics, thermal management systems, and controls.

The light was introduced this May at Lightfair in Philedelphia. According to an Accuity press announcement, the Autobahn will deliver up to 12,000 lumens of light. Company executives say it will be a direct replacement for standard 70-200W high-pressure sodium “cobrahead” roadway luminaires that are in present use.

The Autobahn has been engineered to meet the IESNA RP-8 recommended luminance for roadways. The outdoor luminaire features a service life of approximately 100,000 hours at 40°C and provides 40 to 50 percent in energy savings compared to HPS platforms. Not only must the energy savings be considered financially, the lights will have a reduced climate footprint.

Pointing out that modern roadway luminaires must function in a variety of light, traffic and weather conditions, Michael Naylor, vice president for the company’s outdoor products division said the Autobahn luminaire “…provides integrated solutions and optimal light quality to effectively meet the challenges of a variety of roadway applications.”
