IKEA phasing out incandescent light bulbs

IKEA will be the first retailer in the US to phase out the out-of-date incandescent light bulb, which it will start doing on August 1.

It plans to have the bulb completely eliminated from its US stores by January 1, 2011.

Chip in a few dollars a month to help support independent cleantech coverage that helps to accelerate the cleantech revolution!

IKEA writes:

IKEA customers will have a good choice of other effective energy saving bulbs. While the compact fluorescent bulb (CFL) is the most popular bulb, IKEA also offers a range of LED lamps which are 70% more efficient than using incandescent bulbs. IKEA Halogen lamps which consume 30% less energy are also a great ‘white light’ alternative. And beginning fall, 2010, IKEA will offer a halogen bulb which can be used in a standard light socket. This is called a retro-fit halogen bulb.

It is a great step. And it comes well before federal legislation that will require phasing out of incandescent bulbs starting in 2012.

Nonetheless, with the energy savings of CFLs and other more energy efficient light bulbs on the market, one has to wonder why this didn’t happen sooner.
