
What if you could buy a system that networked your window shades, thermostat, and washing machine together in an energy-saving tango? What if the system was part of your monthly Verizon FiOs package? A Verizon-powered home energy management system might just be available by the end of the year, according to industry sources.
The details of how such a system will work are still unclear. Jim Smith, Verizon’s Director of Media Relations, says that the what and when of the energy management plan aren’t ready yet. No one will say if Verizon has already partnered with other companies.
So basically what we have is an energy management system that has unspecified functionality, no release date, and no backing (as far as we know). But considering the scope of Verizon’s broadband business, whatever the company comes up with will likely have a big impact.
