After a multi-year investigation, the Volkswagen diesel cheating scandal is drawing to a close.
The SEC has charged Volkswagen and former CEO Martin Winterkorn with knowing about the diesel cheating going on at the company as early as 2007 — long before the diesel cheating scandal broke in 2015. Volkswagen vigorously denies the charge.
Former Volkswagen CEO Martin Winterkorn has now been charged by the US Justice Department with conspiracy in relation to the coverup at Volkswagen relating to the diesel vehicle emissions cheating scandal.
The Volkswagen board seems poised to move Matthias Mueller aside as the head of the company and to replace him with Herbert Diess. The move may come as soon as Friday.

The former CEO of Volkswagen, Martin Winterkorn, is now being investigated by prosecutors in the German town of Braunschweig (near the company’s headquarters in Wolfsburg) on suspicion of fraud.
