I cover self-driving vehicles and robotaxis quite frequently as part of this job. In fact, I think we were using the term “robotaxi” before I saw it used by any other media outlet, and certainly before it had become an industry norm.
I recently met with Dr. Xinzhou Wu, Vice President of Autonomous Driving at Xpeng Motors, to learn more about the company’s autonomous vehicle (AV) bottom-up approach, part of its long-term strategic plan. Dr. Wu is in charge of overall strategy and technical planning of the business and team management for Xpeng’s global autonomous driving R&D center in Silicon Valley, California.
It’s been a little while since we dedicated proper time to covering revolutionary eHang and its progress with electric vertical takeoff & landing (eVTOL) aircraft. China knows no speed limit when it comes to technological advance. Local e-mobility startup eHang is pushing boundaries in the electric vertical take-off & landing (eVTOL) aircraft market and is now promising an air taxi service in Guangzhou, China. I look forward to testing that service on my next trip to Guangzhou.
Xpeng Motors is moving a step forward after announcing a stellar 2019 start by launching a pilot ride-hailing service, Pengster. Will it beef up competition or simply move mobility a nudge up? We’ll know eventually. In the meantime, Xpeng Motors is about to roll out ride hailing in the world’s biggest mobility market.
