According to a recent McKinsey study, more than half of all installed solar power generation capacity worldwide could be from rooftop setups under which people generate their own electricity, rather than buying it from a typical centralized power plant.

The city of Los Angeles has more than 12,000 acres (48.5 million square metres, 19 square miles, or 48 square km.) of rooftop space available for an array of solar panels large enough to generate 5.5 GW (5,500 MW or 5.5 billion watts) of electric power.

It was recently announced that construction was about to begin on Australia's first community-owned solar farm, in Queensland's Hervey Bay. Ingenero, a Queensland solar company, was awarded the contract to build the 396-kW solar farm. In addition to the solar farm project, it was also announced that ABB Australia had been awarded a contract to build a 266-kW solar panel system at the Hervey Bay Hospital

Although not about streetcars as the title suggests and not working directly from the private sector possibly a new front has been set up to fight against the successes of the alternative energy movement

Well, I don't think it will come as much surprise, but following up on a CleanTechnica post from last month on the merits of small-scale solar compared to large-scale solar, I thought I'd share parts of a new piece by Solar Energy Industries Association President & CEO Rhone Resch on why we need both (with a little commentary of my own)

Of late there has been much talk about moving towards a solar energy future. This is a positive development (albeit one that is almost too late) and has been driven, no doubt, by recent studies that have shown that solar and wind power are now amongst the cheapest forms of power generation, several critical breakthroughs in related fields, and big moves by some major players. However, it seems that a lot of money is being thrown at a particular type of solar power plant; massive centralized solar plants. It is my opinion that this is a massive mistake
