Some people like “Tesla killer” articles. I don’t know who exactly (other than a few shorts I won’t name in the hopes they don’t come over to this site to comment again). But to most of us, it’s more fun to more realistically explain why Tesla is the one destined to crush the competition in the coming years. One such story stole the show last week.
Maybe this isn’t the right metaphor. Lightning and thunder are essentially the same things — just the light and sound manifestations of a certain phenomenon.
Nonetheless, in a sense, I guess you could say that the Model 3 and Model Y will be different forms of the same thing as well, right? Different vehicle forms using the same powertrain — or a very similar powertrain.
Some people just can’t win.
Some companies just can’t win.
Fate can be harsh.

There are a lot of fun Tesla sales numbers to discuss this week. It’s gobbling up the luxury car market in the US. It broke a quarterly delivery record — by more than doubling it! It now has perhaps the 4th best selling car in the United States. And just look at this quarterly sales chart:
I just spent a long time — much of the day — putting together 8 charts and graphs comparing Tesla to its luxury brand competitors in the USA. In particular, I took a gander at how the Tesla Model 3 is delivering a swift lebewohl to the small and midsize luxury cars it’s competing against.
Tesla increased its deliveries by more than 100% in the third quarter compared to the second quarter, its previous best quarter in history. In 6 years, its Q3 sales jumped from 321 to 83,500.
Its sales come at the expense of cars all over the map. However, the classes it is most directly competing in are the relevant luxury classes.
The world of experts, fake experts, and armchair business magnates has a long history of telling Elon Musk and Tesla what they can’t do.
I’ve been planning to publish our second quarter (Q2) report on large luxury car sales and midsize luxury SUV sales in the US … for a long time. With Tesla’s Q3 sales figures expected tomorrow, it seems 11:00pm tonight is indeed the 11th hour, so here we are.
I follow two things very closely — cleantech and US politics. I consider the latter a civic duty, but seldom weave it into my work. I listen to segments from many sources across the political spectrum and read articles across the political spectrum. I love MSNBC’s coverage because it is generally so good at cutting through the noise, digging into the topics that matter the most (imho), and calling B.S. what it is — B.S.
However, MSNBC doesn’t know cleantech.
Several Democratic Senators and Representatives have introduced legislation to extend the US federal tax credit for zero-emissions vehicles (ZEVs) by 10 years. The extension is wrapped in the Electric Cars Act of 2018.
