The International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) has reported that energy generation and installation costs of concentrated solar power (CSP) projects fell sharply in 2018, down more than 40% from 2010.
Researchers have developed new materials to use in ultra high temperature concentrating solar power systems. High temperatures mean more electricity from the same amount of sunlight, making CSP price competitive with batteries for making electricity from sunlight.
Swedish company Azelio has developed small-scale concentrated solar power systems that may be ideal for bringing electrical power to remote areas that have no access to a traditional electricity grid.
Three US-based Concentrated Solar Power (CSP) startups are now making the leap to gigawatt-scale CSP projects at the global level. Two — SolarReserve and BrightSource Energy — were recipients of Department of Energy federal support through the Loan Guarantee Program and subsequent ARPA-E awards for R&D that helped them refine their innovative technologies. The third, Glasspoint Solar, took a different approach.
South Africa is celebrating yet another success of the Renewable Energy Independent Power Producers Programme with the operationalisation of the country’s first concentrated solar power plant. Abengoa and Industrial Development Corporation (IDC) have commissioned a 100 MW solar thermal power project that they had jointly secured during the first auctions of … [continued]
India’s project developers are finally delivering the concentrated solar power projects allocated to them in 2011. So far, three projects with a cumulative capacity of 200 MW capacity have been commissioned, and four other projects are yet to be commissioned. The latest CSP project to be commissioned under the National Solar Mission … [continued]
I got the chance today to visit (for the second time) Abu Dhabi’s Shams 1 concentrating solar power (CSP) plant, the largest single-unit CSP plant in the world. I’ll run through an overview of this CSP plant again, and then will also add some other details I gathered at the … [continued]
The Californian Energy Commission announced Monday that it would be blocking the construction of Brightsource’s proposed 500 MW Palen Solar Electric Generating System’s project, a concentrated solar power (CSP) project, the fourth such project Brightsource has attempted to construct, of which only the Ivanpah Solar Electric Generating System project has … [continued]
Concentrated solar power markets are growing all over the world, and new projections suggest that, by 2050, they could make up 11.3% of the electricity generated worldwide. A new report released by Global Information points to concentrated solar power’s (CSP) dispatchability, increased efficiency, and track record in innovation as … [continued]
