Though global clean energy investment again exceeded $300 billion for the fifth year in a row in 2018, it was nevertheless down on 2017 figures to $332.1 billion, hovering around the same mark as 2016 which was also down on the year previous.
One of the most important figures used to understand the impact and health of the clean energy sector is the amount of money invested into new clean energy each year, but what do we do when figures don’t seem to match up?
Total global energy investment fell by 2% in 2017, totaling $1.8 billion according to the International Energy Agency’s World Energy Investment 2018 report which was published this week, which also showed $750 billion was spent on the electricity sector, compared to only $715 billion on oil & gas supply, while investment in renewables and energy efficiency fell by 3%.
Bloomberg New Energy Finance has published its latest clean energy investment figures for the first six months of 2018 which reached $138.2 billion, down only 1% on the same six months a year earlier in 2017, while investment in the second quarter actually increased compared to a year earlier.
Clean energy investment for the first quarter of 2018 was down 10% on the same period a year ago to $61.1 billion, according to new figures from Bloomberg New Energy Finance, but there were small highlights thanks primarily to emerging markets such as Morocco, Vietnam, Indonesia, and Mexico.
Bloomberg New Energy Finance experts are predicting that global solar capacity additions made in 2018 will reach 107 gigawatts and that clean energy investment will again hit $330 billion.
