Chevrolet’s Shanghai EN-V 2.0 Carsharing Program Is A Hit
When it comes to carsharing programs, Chevrolet may not be the first company you think of. Yet it is actively involved in several testing programs and is ramping up its Maven carsharing business in the US. The company says it expects to include autonomous versions of its Chevy Bolt electric car in the Maven network next year.
Over the past two years, GM has also participated in a carsharing trial in Shanghai at Jiao Tong University using Chevrolet EN-V 2.0 electric cars. That abbreviation stands for the second generation of the Electric Networked-Vehicle introduced in Shanghai at Expo 2010, by the way. The cars look suspiciously like a GM version of the Renault Twizy.
During the last 2 years, a 16 car fleet of EN-V 2.0 vehicles has logged almost 55,000 miles in and around the Minhang campus in Shanghai. Students and faculty combined to use the cars about 70 times a day during the test period. In all, the cars were rented 35,000 times. The rentals were facilitated by a “one swipe” card access system that takes care of access to the cars and all billing details quickly and easily.
“GM regards car sharing as an important building block for future personal mobility,” says GM China President Matt Tsien. “The pilot program provided GM valuable data and insights into real-world sharing practices and electric vehicle usage. It will help advance our development of sustainable personal mobility solutions for China and the world.”
The EN-V 2.0 was engineered and built by a team at GM China and is part of GM’s vision for sustainable transportation without fossil fuels or carbon emissions by the year 2030. Not coincidentally, that is the same year when India hopes all new cars sold there will be electric. The EV revolution is real and it is coming faster than anyone expected just a few short years ago.
