Swedish furniture (and everything else) giant IKEA has announced the introduction of its own new smart lighting system which it hopes will compete with more expensive solutions like Philips Hue and LIFX.

Announced this week, IKEA unveiled its new Smart Lighting, “an extensive product range with wireless, plug-and-play solutions that allow people to easily adapt lighting in the home.” Customers will be able to dim, turn off, turn on, and switch from warm to cold light all using the app that comes with the TRÅDFRI range.

“The Smart lighting range includes endless solutions for dimming, cold and warm light, remote steering, light panels and doors as well as customized and personalized lighting,” the company enthused. “And it’s all easy, wireless, plug-and-play solutions with a contemporary and stylish look and feel.”

“The LED bulbs in TRÅDFRI are a very good example of how an old, familiar product such as the light bulb, can suddenly do so much more simply by ‘communicating’ with a steering device, therefore enabling more people to have better light,” said Björn Block, Business Leader for IKEA Home Smart.

This is a bold move, though unsurprising given the company’s recent forays into solar, for helping customers get access to a technology which has hitherto been highly expensive and therefore restrictive. IKEA’s Smart Lighting system, using LED bulbs, will allow customers the ability to control their lighting from a handheld remote or an app on the phone, and create different mood settings for different times of day, different events, and simply for the fun of it.

“The Smart lighting range lowers the barrier to get better light at home, bringing it to an absolute minimum,” said Block. “I think of the TRÅDFRI kits as an entry level light that you can build upon, that hopefully inspires and encourages you to start experimenting with your light at home. For $19.99, you get a kit with a steering device and an LED bulb that requires no installation or wiring. Just replace your old bulb with the new, and you have a dimmable light that goes from warm to cold light in three steps.”
