Honeywell announced this week that it has been awarded the contracts for two smart grid projects in Mexico by the country’s federal electrical company.

Honeywell has its fingers in a lot of pies at the moment, including smart thermostats in which it is a leading vendor along with Nest Labs and ecobee, and smart meters which help utilities better understand how their grids are working.

honeywell-1Honeywell’s Smart Energy division is responsible for delivering gas and electricity meters, as well as providing data analytic solutions. The division will therefore deploy more than 200,000 smart electricity meters to seven cities serviced by the Comisión Federal de Electricidad (CFE), as well as communications devices and software analytic tools. According to Honeywell, the smart meters will help CFE reduce costs and enhance service by minimizing electricity losses while also helping to more quickly identify power outages. CFE, which is the largest utility in the Central America and Caribbean region with more than 35 million customers, is currently undergoing an upgrade process which is expected to be completed in July 2017.

This is not a new relationship for Honeywell, having so far provided CFE with more than 1 million meters, which includes some 700,000 smart meters, for residential and commercial customers.

“We are a preferred partner for smart grid projects based on our proven technology and expertise in helping our customers address evolving energy efficiency challenges like non-technical loss,” said Rob Tupker, president Honeywell Smart Energy. “These new CFE awards are the latest in our expanding base of successful turn-key projects across Mexico.”

“The Mexican Electrical Utility estimates the country’s electrical grid loses 13.11% of the electricity it produces, as stated in the 2015 CFE Annual Report,” added Bernardo Castro, general manager of Tecnologías EOS, a member of the consortium chosen by CFE to manage its smart grid initiative. “For more than 10 years we’ve partnered with Honeywell to help CFE modernize its operations and work toward its goal of reducing electrical losses using smart grid technology.”
