NBC’s Seth Meyers Covers Global Warming … & The Presidential Election

It’s pretty well known in our niche community of climate alarmists that media coverage of global warming is absolutely, horribly, insanely slim. It’s really insane. I have a hard time comprehending how irresponsible it is, how big of a professional failure it is.

So, it was a very nice surprise to see Seth Meyers so excellently cover the topic on his most recent “Late Night with Seth Meyers” show (h/t Herman Trabish). It’s really worth a watch, so before writing a bit more, here’s the segment:

Some of the global warming highlights included:

  • July was the world’s single hottest month in recorded history.
  • “Each of the past 15 months have setting records as the hottest ever” (for that month).
  • “For the first time on record, every inch of all 50 states is expected to see above-average temperature for the next 3 months.”
  • The US has had eight 500-year weather events (natural disasters) in just the past 12 months. Just to be absolutely clear, a “500-year weather event” is something that’s so extreme it’s supposed to happen just about once every 500 years. The US had 8 of these in the past year.

Of course, Seth couldn’t stay away from linking the topic to the current US presidential election, and overall Republican insanity on climate science. That included Trump rambling about hairspray and the ozone layer at one of his rallies, and the ironic move by Trump to build a seawall at one of his golf resorts because of rising sea levels.

Ironically, Trump also joked this week that only a “natural disaster” could stop him from debating Hillary Clinton in three planned presidential debates. Trump had previously indicated that there was a chance he might not attend some of these debates, but he is now saying he plans to take part in all of them, so reporters asked him today on his campaign plane if anything could keep him from participating in the three of them. He apparently responded: “Um, hurricanes, natural disaster. No, I expect to do all three.”

Hmm, sometimes you just have to wonder — I’ll just leave it at that.

Thanks to Seth Meyers and crew for bringing more light to the climate change crisis. Not quite the “this means war” response we need, but it’s a good step in that direction. (John Oliver, maybe you want to follow up?)
