A new electric vehicle battery pack startup being backed by big names in the tech sector, dubbed Romeo Power, will be launching products in early 2017 that those involved claim will outperform any electric vehicle battery systems out there currently, according to recent reports.

Romeo Power 1

The new Santa Monica, California–based startup was launched by the noted tech names Michael Patterson and Porter Harris. Harris, now the CTO of Romeo Power, was previously the Chief Battery Architect at Faraday Future, and a technology expert at SpaceX.

He was involved in the design of battery strings at Faraday Future and the development of batteries used in the F9 rocket at SpaceX, as well as in the development of the Crew Dragon Spacecraft life support systems at SpaceX.

Romeo Power 2

Romeo Power’s new electric vehicle (EV) and consumer battery packs will first be available sometime in early 2017, reportedly. The startup is also said to be working on an industrial line of products.

The new company is currently coordinating with local authorities in the states of California and Nevada in order to decide upon the location of a manufacturing facility for the firm’s EV battery packs.

Interestingly, Romeo Power’s Vice President of Electrical Engineering, Arun Gunasekaran, was previously part of the battery technology team at Tesla Motors.

Also very interesting, despite being based in Santa Monica, California, the 50-employee-strong startup is maintaining a presence and team in New Delhi, India, as well. Considering the potential inherent in India, as far as EV market growth and home battery/energy storage market growth, the move is an interesting one.
