Second-Largest German Utility Company Launching Residential Solar + Storage Offering With Solarwatt

The second-biggest utility company in Germany, E.ON, will be launching a new residential solar photovoltaic (PV) + home energy storage product in the country’s market in April, according to recent reports.

The product — which will be based on Solarwatt’s MyReserve energy storage system, which was launched just last year — will be launched with the help of the aforementioned company.

“We will collect feedback from the market and from customers, and then fine-tune the product,” commented E.ON’s vice president of battery systems, Eliano Russo. “The final launch will be in September.”

Pricing for the new product has yet to be revealed, but considering that the MyReserve system is currently sold in the German market for between €7,000 and €9,000, one would presume a similar price point.

The above-mentioned pricing includes the solar PV panels, the battery, an inverter, etc — as well as sales tax. Battery systems from Solarwatt sans the solar PV panels and inverter run about €5,500 currently (for a 4.4 kilowatt-hour battery system).

The manufacturer of the battery cells that will be used in the new offering has yet to be revealed as well — but rumors point towards Samsung SDI. Considering that E.ON and Samsung SDI initiated a new partnership in December 2015, there seems likely to be something to the rumor.

The senior vice president of technology and innovation at E.ON, Susana Quintana-Plaza, commented: “E.ON is committed to empowering customers and promoting decentralized energy solutions while expanding our power grids and making them smarter.”
