Solar installation figures for 2015 continue to roll in, with South America’s Chile and North Africa’s Algeria both completing strong years.

According to the latest figures from Chile’s renewable energy research institute, Centro para la Innovación y Fomento de las Energías Sustentables (CIFES), Chile finished 2015 with installed solar PV capacity of 848 MW. Chile installed 98 MW of PV in December alone, though that followed a November where the country only installed 3 MW.

Nevertheless, this represented an impressive year for Chile: In 2013, the country had less than 10 MW of solar installed. A year later it had 402 MW, and now at the end of 2015 it brought that figure up to 848 MW, with an additional 2,195 MW of PV currently under construction and a pipeline of approved projects totaling over 10 GW, and a further 3,944 MW of projects still being vetted.

Across the oceans to North Africa, where Algeria installed approximately 268 MW of solar PV capacity in 2015, according to the country’s state-owned renewable energy research institute, CDER. A subsidiary of Algeria’s state-owned utility was responsible for the strong growth in PV installations in 2015.

Algeria currently has a national renewable energy target to install 22 GW of renewables, and for energy efficiency to save the country’s 9% of energy usage, all by 2030.

These figures play into larger predictions that emerging markets throughout Latin America, Africa, and Asia, will soon be impacting the global installed capacity of PV. 2015 was a strong year for emerging markets throughout these regions, and with continually decreasing solar prices and a steady income of funding from around the world, this is likely to continue through the next decade and more.
