One-Third Of US Energy Storage Deployments In 2014 Delivered By Greensmith
One-third of all energy storage capacity installed in America for the year 2014 was deployed by Greensmith and uses the company’s software platform for management, according to a recent statement from the company. Greensmith delivers turn-key energy storage solutions like systems with batteries, inverters, and BOP components. It also makes software for energy storage management.
John Jung, CEO of Greensmith explained, “And a growing number of power producers, developers and utilities are relying on Greensmith to meet their energy storage technology needs, as reflected in our pipeline currently exceeding 500 megawatts. There is no substitute for a track record of success when it comes to deploying any grid-scale technology so our customers value our experience delivering 45 systems across the country as well as internationally.”
GTM Research and the Energy Storage Association (ESA) recently reported that 61.9 MW of energy storage became operational in the US in 2014. Greensmith software was used to integrate and manage 23 MW of that total, including the largest battery power system deployed in 2014. Greensmith also provided frequency regulation services to the PJM wholesale market. PJM Interconnection coordinates electricity in all or parts of 13 US states and the District of Columbia. About 51 million people live in this service area. Its installed capacity is about 167,326 megawatts, and there are over 500 buyers in the wholesale market.
Since coming on the market, Greensmith has integrated with twelve energy storage battery types, including lithium-ion, aqueous-ion, and flow batteries. The Greensmith software platform is technology agnostic and integrates all storage components in a complete life cycle. The software is in its 4th generation and has been developed over 6 years. It has advanced algorithms for string balancing and loss mitigation. Used by 20 customers at over 40 sites, it has been field tested by Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI), Sandia National Labs, and KEMA.
Greensmith is based in Emeryville, California, and was established in 2008.
News stories about energy storage have tended to focus on battery technology developments, but intelligent software and analytics also play an important role in managing energy storage.
