Elon Musk Pledges $1 Million To Tesla Museum

The Oatmeal creator Matthew Inman is not one to mince words, and the man lavished his Tesla Model S with praise in a way only he could, calling it (among other things) “An Intergalactic Space Boat of Light and Wonder”. He then went on to ask Tesla CEO Elon Musk for a donation to a museum dedicated to Tesla’s namesake, Nikola Tesla. Today it was announced that Musk was officially pledging of $1 million to the museum, and on the 158th birthday of Nikola Tesla himself no less. Sometimes it pays to just ask.

The announcement was made on a streaming video (around the 1 hour 7 minute mark) this morning to celebrate the birth of Nikola Tesla, who has become something of an Internet folk hero thanks to Inman’s rabid fanboyism. Inman has since confirmed the donation on his own site with a surprisingly succinct and simple thank you. He also spearheaded a campaign to start a museum at Tesla’s old lab in Wardenclyffe New York, and successfully raised over $1 million to buy the property.

Unfortunately, it will take another $8 million to rehab the property, though they’re now $1 million closer thanks to Musk’s donation, and his support comes with other perks too. Musk also pledged to build a Supercharger station on the site, making it a destination for future Tesla owners, and he challenged museum staff to use the funds wisely, indicating that more support could be forthcoming if the progress impresses him.

Nikola Tesla’s contributions can never be measured in full, and Elon Musk is laying his own path in changing the world for the better, despite the two being more than a century apart in age. Is it any wonder that Elon Musk is a hero to many denizens of the Internet and the car world as well?

I am afraid the money is just going to be used to create a museum, which of course is a great idea for giving people an idea of who Tesla was… but, my point is that I’m sad that the money is not going to be used to rebuild the Wardenclyffe tower and the earth antenna beneath it… so in the end, the museum will just cover up the real purpose Nikola Tesla had in mind with this project: free energy for all on this planet.

  • No way

It’s nice to see another museum dedicated to this great serbian.
