Algae Research At Masdar Institute (CT Exclusive Video)
It’s taken me awhile to get back to a bunch of videos I filmed during the second annual Abu Dhabi Sustainability Week*, but this post is going to kick off a second wave of footage from that awesome week. This first article + video is about algae research that is going on at Masdar Institute. Here’s the video:
If you are allergic to videos, here are some of a key point from the video the Masdar Institute researchers are looking at local algae and seeing this algae performs in water with various levels of salinity.
Of course, algae can be used for biofuel, but it is also an important food source, and algae products could replace conventional oil products used in cosmetics, pharmaceuticals, etc.
The researchers are looking to bring algae biofuel to market with corporate partners. For example, a large oil company whose name is two letters long (ahem, BP).
Note that algae biofuel is not the same as the potentially breakthrough halophyte biofuel that Boeing, Masdar Institute, Etihad Airways, and others are working on.

*My trip to Abu Dhabi for Abu Dhabi Sustainability Week was covered my Masdar. That said, I was not required to write about or film anything and I’ve only covered stories that I found especially interesting.
