Thanks to a CleanTechnica reader, I now have a very reliable source for monthly plug-in car sales data from Sweden, one of the strongest plug-in car markets. The Swedish market is an interesting one, as it’s one of just a few countries in which plug-in hybrids beat out 100% electric cars.

You can see that, in March, the top 3 plug-in cars were plug-in hybrids—the routinely dominant Mitsubishi Outlander Plug-in had 144 sales (35% electric car market share), the Volvo V60 Plug-in had 87 sales (21% market share), and the Toyota Prius Plug-in had 45 sales (11% market share). 4th was a tie between the world-leading Nissan LEAF and the BMW i3, which is split between a fully electric version and a version with a gasoline range extender. Each of these models received 38 sales, 9% market share.

For the year to date, it’s a very similar story. The Mitsubishi Outlander Plug-in is #1 (248 sales, 33%), the Volvo V60 Plug-in #2 (121 sales, 16%), the Toyota Prius Plug-in #3 (86 sales, 11%), the Nissan LEAF #4 (85 sales, 11%), and the BMW i3 #5 (70 sales, 9%). The Mitsubishi Outlander Plug-in is certainly growing a very strong lead and will be hard to knock off the top spot, but we’ll see.

As with Norway, Sweden had more plug-in car sales in March than in both January and February combined. March was actually a strong month in countries across Europe as well as in the US.

Here are static images of the two charts above:
