Car sharing could take a huge bite out of new and used vehicle sales, and Palo Alto-based vukee Car wants to loan you a Tesla Model S for your next trip. Set to launch this spring, it could be your best option yet for driving the cutting edge Model S on a regular basis.

Even with a $7,500 Federal tax credit and additional local incentives (like a $5,000 California tax rebate), the $70,000 Tesla Model S still costs way too much money for 99%. With car sharing becoming an increasingly popular alternative to car ownership, especially among America’s many Millennials, it was only a matter of time before one of these many services started offering the Tesla Model S for regular excursions.

vukee Car is set to launch this spring in the heart of car sharing country, and unlike many car sharing services that require a monthly membership fee, vukee Car charges only an hourly rate for when you use their vehicles. While not the first electric car sharing service, it is the first one to offer drivers a seat behind the wheel of a Tesla Model S.

The service is launching in Palo Alto, in the heart of Silicon Valley, right next door to Fremont, which hosts the NUMMI factory that Tesla Motors shares with Toyota. The Teslas will be parked on the street or in lots, and everything will be managed via a smartphone app. Insurance is taken care of by vukee, meaning all you need is a valid drivers license, a credit card, and the smartphone app, which details information like range, charging status, and rental rates (I assume).

Pricing hasn’t been announced, but vukee Car “donators” can have their names added to one of the vinyl-wrapped Teslas located nearby, making it more “their” car. The app lets you track where your car is going and add entries to the car’s driver dairy. There’s no mention of how sharing will work, but there are plenty of fast-charging options and Supercharger locations all around Silicon Valley, so that shouldn’t be too much of a problem.

The Tesla Model S is the perfect vehicle for vukee Car, though expanding outside of California could be difficult. Once again, the East Coast is left out in the cold while California gets yet another option for rocking the Tesla Model S.
