I recently got a chance to check out a couple of electric tuk tuks at EVS27 in Barcelona. Unfortunately, I didn’t get to test drive them, just snap pics. Below are most of my pics of these tuk tuks, followed by some information about the vehicles.

The tuk tuk in the first photo is from Ecotuk BCN. You can rent this electric tuk tuk in order to tour Barcelona in a quiet and environmentally friendly way. You can choose a tour Ecotuk BCN recommends or you can create your own. The price to rent the vehicle is €60 per hour. Not cheap, but it seats several, so it could be a good option for a group of tourists.

Zbee

The rest of the photos are of the Zbee, which is clearly a smaller vehicle. The Zbee website notes that the Zbee uses just 7% of the energy that a fossil fuel–powered city car uses, a whopping 93% reduction!

You may not notice from a first glance, but the Zbee can actually transport up to 3 people at a time. There’s also a small trunk for some cargo. Small, quiet, and clean, the website notes that “you can even drive the Zbee straight into your home.”

The Zbee has a range of ~50 kilometers (~31 miles) on a single charge. It has a max speed of ~45 km/h (~28 mph). It is certainly smaller and slower than the average American car, but it could do well in some markets, especially in the developing world.

In 2013, the Zbee won a WWF Climate Solver Award. “Production is set to be overseen by Bajaj in Indonesia (who also manufacture Genuine Scooters’ Stella model) at a rate of 10,000 per year,” Jo wrote in July 2013. Here’s a video of the electric tuk tuk that he shared at the time:
