Trees, Water and People, a nonprofit run by conservationists, has launched a for-profit subsidiary aimed at bringing more solar power to Latin America. The subsidiary, Luciérnaga, “distributes small (<15W) solar lighting technologies that affordably meet lighting and device charging needs for energy poor populations.”

Trees, Water and People has had a solar energy program in place since as far back as January 2012. I’ve been following its progress, and while I haven’t written on any of its projects in a long time, I have seen some interesting ones implemented in various Central American locations. The program seems to be going well, as its success was the impetus for this new subsidiary.

“As demand for our products grows, we have incorporated Luciérnaga LLC as a subsidiary of Trees, Water & People in order to more efficiently manage our supply chain, reducing the cost of lights for our many customers,” an announcement on the nonprofit’s blog states.

We are excited to grow this social enterprise so we can bring clean energy to families throughout Central America. You can support our work! Please visit our new crowdfunding campaign to see how you can help.

For more info please visit the new Luciérnaga website or email Sebastian Africano at sebastian@luciernagasolar.com.

It looks like the crowdfunding campaign could use some real help. Give it a hand and share the news!
