It's inevitable that as fossil fuels start to run out, hybrid and electric cars as well as other innovations in car technology will start to shape the motor trade in new ways. Other industries will be effected too: insurance, maintenance and repair, rentals and leasing, etc.

What I mean is a ~200 mile range EV that most new car purchasers can afford. The S is out of most people’s cost range.

This largely comes down to higher capacity batteries. Pack more miles into the same space and with the same weight as today’s more affordable EVs. Once we get range then sales volumes will pick up and economies of scale will pull down prices.

Already done. Tesla has a battery that will get 300 miles on a charge and free charging stations that will charge the battery to 80% in 1/2 hour or a battery swap which only takes 90 seconds.

Well, it does say “more than 40%”. My guess is that if we get a 200 mile range battery (about 3x capacity of today’s batteries) by 2020 we’ll be close to 100% by 2035.

That’s 100% of new car sales. Another decade to get the gasmobiles off the road except for collector cars.
