Sometimes I have to ask myself “Is Elon Musk really as cool as he seems?” I mean if I had a billion dollars, the first thing I’d try to do is start a car company, which is what Musk did. Musk also paid nearly $1 million for the Lotus Esprit submarine from the James Bond movie “The Spy Who Loved Me”, with intentions of making it functional with a Tesla drivetrain.

The Bond submarine is one of the most-famous movie vehicles of all time, and Musk paid $966,560 when all was said and done for the privilege of owning it. Most people would be satisfied with displaying such a prize in their car collection or bedroom, but not Musk. No, the electric car entrepreneur and private spaceflight pioneer wants to upgrade the Esprit with a Tesla drivetrain and make it a fully-functional, transforming car/submarine.

This is exactly the kind of ridiculous thing I would do, and it really only heightened Musk’s appeal among car enthusiasts. Elon Musk has become one of the most talked-about people of 2013, and he has managed to create such a wide-reaching appeal with his projects and social-media savvy. The non-functioning Lotus submarine will soon be getting a Tesla Model S drivetrain, and Musk will make it work just like in the movies. You would have to make a concentrated effort to not like this guy.

A Tesla-powered James Bond vehicle, now that is something else. How much you want to bet a Tesla Model S makes a guest appearance in the next Bond film? I’m betting Musk might have just enough sway these days to make it happen.

“By” not “buy” in the headline. Beware of cupertinos!

Isn’t the Bond submarine a piece of the British national heritage and it’s a crime or something to vandalise it?
The Bond producers (a small family business in London) are pretty good at spotting tech trends so I would not be surprised if your speculation has legs. I did suggest to Foro Energy, who are developing high-power laser drilling for geothermal use – >50kw down >1km of fibre – , that they contact the Bond people, Reviving Goldfinger’s laser cutter would be a nice retro touch.
