pollutionClimate change is the defining challenge of our time – carbon pollution from fossil fuels is already affecting the way that people live in real and tangible ways, and it is time to act to protect our way of life.

Last year, The Climate Reality Project, founded and chaired by former Vice President Al Gore, ran a 24-hour broadcast called 24 Hours of Reality: The Dirty Weather Report, which showcased some of the worst impacts that extreme weather – caused by climate change – is having all over the world. But it also set the stage for many of the innovative solutions that people are implementing on individual, local, regional, and national scales.

This year’s broadcast, 24 Hours of Reality: The Cost of Carbon, which will take place October 22-23, will explore some of the financial and human impacts of climate change – both the obvious and the hidden — as well as the way forward by putting a price on carbon.

Calculating these nearly-incalculable costs is essential for understanding just exactly what is at stake. The good news is that these costs can be brought down – and eventually eliminated – by the increased rollout of clean energy technologies that are already widespread. In many areas, solar photovoltaic power has nearly achieved grid parity, meaning that it costs the same as traditional fuels, but emits far less carbon. Once turbines are installed, wind power is the cheapest source of new electricity in many locations around the world. Energy efficiency in buildings, appliances, and transmission and distribution systems saves consumers money while slashing carbon emissions.

Chip in a few dollars a month to help support independent cleantech coverage that helps to accelerate the cleantech revolution!

Whether you live near the coast and are threatened by sea level rise, or you are in an area where more extreme weather and rising temperatures bring higher costs and new vulnerability, or you are experiencing higher healthcare costs because more people get sick each year, the cost of our dependence on carbon fuels affects all of us. Watch the web broadcast to find out when, how, and why you’re paying more for inaction, and join the call for a price on carbon.

Starting at 2 pm EDT on Tuesday, October 22, 24 Hours of Reality: The Cost of Carbon will travel around the world, identifying the costs of carbon pollution and the solution that can change the course of our future.
