A 100 MW solar energy project is now in the works in the Pakistani state of Punjab, thanks to the signing of a memorandum of understanding between the British company Pan Africa and the government of the Punjab. The large solar park will be based in Bahawalpur in eastern Punjab.

The project is intended to “overcome” the emerging energy crisis in the populous state, according to Punjab Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif. The memorandum of understanding (MoU) was signed on behalf of the Punjab government by Secretary of Energy Usman Bajwa, and on behalf of Pan Africa by representative Marcus Heel.

PV Magazine provides more info: “The solar park will be developed in Quaid-e-Azam, Bahawalpur. Sharif added that the targets of economic development in the country cannot be achieved without overcoming the energy crisis and that the Punjab government has been cooperating with different companies on launching more of such solar projects under a coordinated strategy. Additionally government offices are also being shifted to solar energy under a phased program.”

The signing ceremony was attended by a number of people of note, including British Senior Minister of State for Foreign Affairs Baroness Sayeeda Warsi, Provincial Energy Minister Sher Ali Khan, and other members of the Assembly.

In related news: “The country’s minister for energy and mines, Chaudhry Sher Ali, has pledged all street lights at city district level will become solar powered and then household solar will be introduced. No timeline for the solar rollout was mentioned in the Pakedu.net report which goes on to state Ali’s announcement that the Pakistan government’s top two aims are to generate as much energy as possible in as short a space of time as possible and to prosecute electricity thieves.”
