Vestas & Duke Team Up For Southern Texas Wind Farms (400 MW)
Duke Energy Renewables has ordered 400 MW of wind-energy projects from Vestas Wind Systems to be built in Texas, which sees Vestas owners of the largest global wind-energy order in the past three years.
The two projects — Los Vientos III and Los Vientos IV — will consist of 200 Vestas V110-2.0 MW wind turbines to be and will be located some 100 miles west of Brownsville near Rio Grande City in Starr County. The 400 MW will be split evenly between the two farms, which are slated to begin construction in the final quarter of 2013.
The two new wind farms will create enough energy to power approximately 120,000 average homes.
“We are pleased to again be bringing jobs, economic development and clean, affordable electricity to Texas, where we have our largest presence,” said Duke Energy Renewables President Greg Wolf. “We’re also glad to be working again with Austin Energy on projects that further their commitment to investing in renewable power.”
“Continuing our partnership with Duke Energy, one of the largest utilities in the United States, is really important to Vestas,” said Chris Brown, President of Vestas’ sales and service division in the United States and Canada. “We won this deal in a very competitive process and thank Duke for its faith in Vestas to deliver high quality services and products such as our new V110-2.0 MW turbine. These turbines will be able to power nearly 120,000 Texas households with clean, reliable electricity for decades. This order also will keep our U.S. factories busy and create jobs for Vestas service technicians who ensure the turbines are producing the maximum amount of power.”
