SolarCity + Viridian = More Home Solar & More “Green” Electricity

SolarCity is “the #1 full-service solar power provider” in the US. Viridian Energy is “a socially responsible retail energy supplier” that feeds greener electricity to its customers. It is serving customers in 9 states and Washington, DC. Earlier this week, the two announced that they were teaming up, likely supplying even more solar-sourced electricity to even more US citizens and businesses.

The partnership doesn’t look complicated. SolarCity’s offering — electricity from rooftop solar panels that is cheaper than what they pay for electricity from the grid — is to be extended to Viridian Energy customers; and Viridian Energy’s offering — electricity from relatively clean energy sources* (even when their rooftop solar power system isn’t producing electricity) — is to be extended to SolarCity customers in overlapping markets.

The big boost is simply the cross-promotion and the access to each other’s customer pool, people who are clearly clean energy fans.

That means that SolarCity will get access to Viridian’s 230,000 customers (served through 20,000 contractors). And Viridian will gain access to SolarCity’s massive and fast-growing customer base.

All in all, the result is clear — more people and businesses will go solar, and more people and businesses will sign up for greener electricity during non-solar hours. Win for society. Wind for customers. Win for SolarCity. Win for Viridian Energy.

*Viridian Energy provides electricity from clean energy (e.g., wind and solar) power plants, but it also provides electricity from natural gas power plants, which are generally considered to be cleaner than the alternatives, but certainly not by everyone!
