No fair-minded person would equivalate fracking to wind or solar farms. While the latter may on occasion threaten rare local species (when done poorly), the former threatens entire ecosystems. The scale of fracking operations over areas such as the Marcellus and Barnett Shale is mind blowing. Google "fracking aerial pictures" to get an idea. We're talking tens of thousands of pads, each with a significant (up to several acres) industrial like footprint. The pollution around the wells (air and water), not just from accidental spills, though denied by the industry and corrupted officials, is obvious, as well as the detrimental health impact to people, livestock and wildlife. The damage done to nature and the communities affected will be irreversible. This is a time bomb that is going to backfire big time, no pun intended.

When solar panels need installing right on top of endangered tortoises, they go in. When wind turbines need roads through national parks, they are bulldozed. When 30% of corn acreage is dedicated to biofuels, wiping out gains made in converting farm land to wild lands, its ok.

Those are real ecological 'side effects' of 'green' energy.
