"It means that the science of the situation has not been explained in a
way that the average American — or, for that matter, the average anyone — can understand." I'm sorry, this is wrong. It has been well enough explained however it is not a gun in their face, as was Pearl Harbour, so it can't be all that bad. A lack of urgency combined with apathy and greed is a far more true explanation!

I don't think it's a good idea to assume the worst.

The majority of climate scientists are telling us we have the ability/opportunity to avoid the worst outcome.

Better, in my opinion, to assume we can prevent the worst and then do what we each can do to improve our chances.

Worry? I believe in God, so I cannot worry. Does that mean I don't think renewable energy is a good idea? No, solar energy is awesome. God has a plan, and man cannot change it (as soon as you think we did, you will find that that was His plan). We can all rejoice knowing that God is in control. Now excuse me while I shop for solar panels.

The danger of retirement, for me at least, is having the time to research AGW and CC. I used to 'worry' about what climate change might mean to my grandchildren. Now that I have come to understand what happens as the planet warms I have lost my worry and have become despondent. While many people think that the biggest threat is a sea that is 2 meters higher I have come to realize that the extinction of most life on the planet is going to be the outcome of our having tampered with the CO2 levels in the atmosphere This has naturally led to a massive venting of that other carbon based atom, methane CH4. If not contained, we can expect the climate change (which is already dramatic) to become exponential, non-linear and uncontrollable. By 2100 mankind's demise will become fifty years old. The bottom line is this. It doesn't matter what anyone "believes" about GW or CC. It's going to change this world in ways that no one wants and sooner than most think. Call me an alarmist if it makes you feel better but Josh has it right... "It means, in short, we’re seriously screwed."
